(BCN) SAN LEANDRO Somebody’s attempt to heat cooking oil led to an apartment fire in San Leandro Sunday night that triggered the building’s sprinklers and caused water damage to eight units, Alameda County Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan O’Hara said Monday.
O’Hara said fire units were alerted to a fire at 15267 Hesperian Blvd. around 9:53 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival rescuers found the building’s fire sprinklers had slowed the spread of the kitchen fire. But eight units sustained water damage amounting to some $12,000, O’Hara said. The building was judged to have no structural damage from the fire, and the one involved unit sustained $1,000 in damage to its contents. The unit where the fire began was rendered unfit for habitation, and occupants were referred to the American Red Cross for temporary shelter, O’Hara said. There were no reported injuries.
