San Jose market saved from blaze by sprinklers
8/15/2006 (Source: The Mercury News)

A one-alarm fire at a San Jose market early this morning could have been a lot worse, were it not for a working sprinkler system.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the blaze started at 4:20 a.m. in a water heater room at Seafood City market on 3065 McKee Road. The store's sprinkler system activated, enabling firefighters to contain the fire to the one room by 4:40 a.m. There were no injuries in the fire, according to the fire department, which reports that the market sustained minor damage, mostly to the water heater room, and some water damage. The fire was likely started by a vacuum cleaner that sparked or got too close to the water heater, but the cause remains under investigation, according to the fire department.Copyright © 2006 by Bay City News, Inc. -- republication, re-transmission or reuse without the express written consent of Bay City News, Inc. is prohibited.
